We are planning on returning to the cores in the fall of 2022 at Ben Taub Hospital. As we navigate our plans for the upcoming semester, safety and flexibility are our priorities. We respect everyone’s individual choice to participate in PDI in whatever capacity that is most comfortable and meaningful to them. Despite the unprecedented circumstances, we are committed to supporting our community and addressing health inequities in Houston as well as ensuring that PDI remains an inclusive, meaningful experience for our volunteers.

Below we have outlined our requirements as well as additional engagement opportunities for PDI this semester:

Requirements

The following events are required for all PDI volunteers; the time commitment of the training and CE requirements is around 8 hours/semester.

  • Fall Volunteer Training – Saturday, October 10th, 2020
  • 2 Continuing Education (CE) Credits
    • With topics such as patient interaction and communication, health advocacy, and intersectionality, CEs are workshops that strive to promote reflection on the larger context of our mission and supplement our volunteering experiences.

Other Opportunities

The following are optional ways to engage in PDI throughout the semester; please note that each opportunity requires a time commitment of around 1-2 hours/week.

  • Resource Deep Dive: Volunteers can work on reviewing a specific domain of resources to develop a stronger understanding of our resources, establish relationships with our community partners, explore the possibility of warm referrals, and better educate ourselves on the patients’ experience using these resources.
  • Committees Projects: Volunteers can participate in one (or more!) of our nine committees, which develop and execute a number of PDI-related projects. You can read more about committees and current projects here.
  • PDI Socials:  Volunteers can host weekly social events to foster community and support while we are all physically apart.
