The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as the Food Stamp Program)*.  Generally 86% of people that are on this program are below the poverty line and 42% are below the half-way mark on the poverty line.  However, this is not only for economically disadvantaged individuals. It is also for the victims of natural and man-made disasters. The people who qualify for snap receive an EBT (Electronic Benefit Card) that works like a debit card (they can purchase approved groceries using this card)1

Benefits

SNAP recipients receive a monthly allowance that can be used to purchase food.  Most of the time benefits are for six months and are renewable after that. At other times, benefits are just for one month.  Patrons will be sent a renewal form that must be submitted for further benefits past the original stated time period.

  • Lone Star or SNAP card to purchase groceries with
  • Access to SNAP-Ed programming to help make healthier choices
  • If working 20 hours a week or in a job training program, eligible for benefits to continue longer.
  • If ages 18-50 with no child or other dependent in home, benefits are limited to maximum of three months in a three year period unless in job (20+ hrs a week) or training program.  Other exceptions may apply.

They can do this form online or in paper format.  If they have access to the web, they can do it online and actually track the progress of their case.To apply for SNAP, you must fill out the application and send it in with all of the required documentation.  You must then schedule an interview with your local SNAP office.  You will need to bring many documents with you to this interview (find sample list below).  Please emphasize that they have copies of all of their documents AND take the original documents as well.  However, remind them to securely hang on to their original documentation and not to surrender the original document for this purpose.  They should receive notification of eligibility soon after.  However, if they are not approved, they should return to their local SNAP office and discuss their case with a SNAP officer because sometimes there are minor problems with documentation or other glitches that can serve as a barrier to receiving benefits.**If the person lives too far away or has any other reason why they would not be able to make it to a SNAP interview (i.e. work), they will indicate this on their application and they may be able to work around this (but no guarantees).
