Rides Eligiblity Requirements

Harris County RIDES is a curb-to-curb subsidized program that provides 50% off non-emergency transportation services for the elderly, disabled, and low-income residents of Harris County who live outside the METROLift service area or are unable to access METRO services.

 Benefits


You get 50% savings on transportation costs. This means that you pay $5 for $10 worth of credit stored on your E-card.

SHARED RIDE

This non-metered program in which passengers share rides with other passengers requires advance reservations. Of the two, this is the most economical. The cost is based on the mileage distance from the point of pick-up to the destination. The price will range from $6.00 to $42.00, with the customer paying only 50% of this cost.  Trips must be booked a minimum of 24 hours in advance.

Wheelchair accessibility provided. When scheduling a shared ride trip, please call your provider of choice before noon on the previous day. Reservations can be made up to 4 days ahead.
*Monday requests MUST be before 2 PM on Friday.

Cancellation requests available every day. NOTE: You may have up to 2 cancellations in any 30-day period. Upon the third cancellation in a 30-day period, a 30-day suspension from use of the program will follow.

TAXI SERVICE
The cost of this metered same-day service is based on the rate of the meter fare box. Customers may take a one-way trip with a maximum up to $48.00 – the customer pays 50% of the trip cost. With this service, rides are dispatched on the same day as the request. Trips can be booked 90 minutes in advance. Customers are responsible for any taxi fare cost over $48.00

REMEMBER: quote is ONE-WAY, roundtrip is 2x that amount. Call the taxi provider of your choice for trip cost estimates. Please be prepared to provide the agent with the origin and destination address.

Same-day service for taxi rides dispatched on the same day as the request. (GOOD for >1 passengers – up to 4).

You must have a yearly income below $21,350 per year. Income documents are required.

Proof of Harris County Residency

Documents are required to prove residency in Harris County.

Valid Government-issued Identification

You must either have a state-issued Identification Card or a state-issued Drivers License.

Adding Funds to Your Account

To add funds to your E-card, you can mail a cashier’s check or money order to the RIDES office at 9418 Jensen, Houston, Texas 77093. Funds should be added within 24 hours.

SIX STEPS TO MAKING YOUR RESERVATION

  • STEP 1: Select and call a provider.
  • STEP 2: Say, “I am a RIDES customer” and give them your telephone number and address.
  • STEP 3: Tell the agent where you want to go and give a time for pickup.
  • STEP 4: Tell agent when you want them to return to pick you up.
  • STEP 5: Tell agent if you are traveling with a companion or use a wheelchair.
  • STEP 6: Request your reservation number.
   IMPORTANT AFTER BOOKING RESERVATION
  • Write down reservation number
  • Write down pick-up time
  • Write down ticket/fare amount quoted

*MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR PICTURE ID AND RIDES E-CARD*
You must be at the designated spot during the pick-up window. That means 15 minutes before and 30 minutes after scheduled pick-up time. 

Drivers will only wait 5 minutes after arrival during this window. 

Upon exiting the vehicle, present your RIDES E-card for swiping.

The driver will provide a receipt that contains your card balance.

If you do not have sufficient funds on your RIDES e-card for trip payment, you are charged a NO-SHOW. You may have 2 verified NO-SHOWs in any 30-day period.  Upon the third no-show in a 30-day period, a 30-day suspension from the program will follow. For all no-shows, an attempt to contact you will be made by the transportation provider’s dispatcher before the driver leaves the pick-up address.

NO HOLIDAY SERVICE

There will be no transit services on these dates.
