The LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a federally funded program that provides support to needy low-income households for utility bill payments. Federal funds are distributed to each state and the individual states then administer the program and funds distribution. LIHEAP pays partial energy bills for eligible families. The Program makes payments directly to your local utility company.

It is important to note that the program provides support on a first come-first serve basis. It is best to apply as early as possible because some states provide no further support once their federal funding has run out.

Eligibility

Income Requirement

The LIHEAP program in your community determines if your household income qualifies for the program. However you must fall into one of these categories:
Elderly – Must be at least 60 years old.Disabled – Must be receiving disability benefits from either Social Security or employer/insurance disability benefits.Households with children under the age of 5 – Must provide birth certificates for children 5 years old or younger.
Patients interested in applying for LIHEAP are required to call and schedule an appointment with one of the agencies listed here. At this appointment, each patient’s income eligibility will be assessed. Unlike other states, Texas does not post application information online. Thus, in order for patients to take advantage of LIHEAP, they must schedule an appointment with an agency that provides information about LIHEAP in their county.
